Phillies Clinch NL East Title in Complete Win Over Cubs

13 years. That’s how long it’s been since the Phillies were able to accomplish what they did tonight with their 6-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The Philadelphia Phillies are your 2024 National League East division champions.

J.T. Realmuto got the scoring started for the Phillies with a two-run homer into the bushes in the second inning. Kyle Schwarber would follow this up with a homer of his own in the following inning.

This was Schwarber’s 37th home run of the season and 100th RBI of the year, marking the second time in his career he got triple digits (he hit 104 in 2023).

In the same inning three batters later, Nick Castellanos would drive home Trea Turner with a single to put the Phils up 4-0.

Bryce Harper would be the next to score for the Phillies in the fifth after a very ugly defensive showing for Chicago where Harper stole second and capitalized on a fielding error to take home as well. Schwarber would drive in another run an inning later by grounding into a double play to bring Brandon Marsh home.

On the mound for the Phillies, Aaron Nola gave another solid performance. Through six innings he managed his way through a few tight spots to keep the Cubs off the board completely. Things got a bit shaky in the seventh, where he gave up a pair of doubles to give Chicago their first run of the game, before loading up the bases with no outs and being pulled for reliever Matt Strahm. Strahm would limit the damage to just one more run. This would be the final that either team would score for the rest of the game.

Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez would close the door, securing not only a 6-2 victory but a division title as well. The focus now becomes the top seed in the National League, but for right now let’s just sit back and enjoy this hard-earned accomplishment.
