Philadelphia Phillies via X
Your Philadelphia Phillies officially clinched a spot in the 2024 playoffs tonight, beating up on the New York Mets at Citi Field, 12-2, with win number 92.
After allowing a homer and another run in the 1st inning to make it 2-0, Cristopher Sanchez settled in a bit more but was still not his normal self. Sanchez labored more than usual but went five innings. The lefty starter got out of a bases-loaded jam in the 5th, freezing Alonzo with a nasty change-up, as the bullpen took over after that.
Offense Gets Going
The Phillies loaded the bases with no outs in the 2nd but could only muster one run. Then in the 3rd, it was tied up 2-2 on a Nick Castellanos RBI single.
In the 4th, the Phightins’ offense got going. Johan Rojas got the party started, slapping a ground-rule double in the 4th to make it 4-2. Trea Turner hit a ground ball single to give the Phillies the 5-2 lead. Alec Bohm then cranked a 3-run homer to make it 8-2, breaking the score open against the rival Mets.
The Phillies scored six runs in the 4th, essentially solidifying their win and a postseason berth. Bohm had 4 hits, tacking on another RBI single in the 6th to make the score 9-2 in favor of the good guys. Castellanos then hit a sacrifice ground out to extend the lead to 10-2 in favor of the Phillies.
In the 8th, J.T. Realmuto hit a 2-run home run to make the score 12-2, pouring it on in this victory.
Playoff Bound
A combination of Orion Kerkering, Matt Strahm, Tyler Gilbert, and Jeff Hoffman in the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th, respectively, shut down the Mets offense to ensure that Philly clinched a playoff spot tonight, officially sending them back to the postseason for the third year in a row.
With one more win, the Phillies will clinch a National League East division crown for the first time since 2011.
