J.T. Realmuto hits 10-day IL with right knee pain, having surgery Wednesday

One of the toughest players in baseball will have to undergo surgery.
The Phillies placed J.T. Realmuto on the 10-day IL (retro to 6/10) with right knee pain. To fill his spot on the 26-man roster, Rafael Marchán was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Realmuto is scheduled to undergo right knee meniscectomy surgery on Wednesday in Philadelphia. The timetable for MLB players returning from that procedure ranges from four to eight weeks. Realmuto currently has no timeline.
Realmuto has been dealing with but playing through soreness in the knee for about a month. It is time for him to spend some time out with it.
Losing Realmuto is a major loss for the Phils. They have dealt with a good amount of injuries lately, including Trea Turner and Brandon Marsh. They have been able to sustain those losses, but this one may be tougher. Realmuto is one of the most all-around value catchers in baseball, along with being a leader in the clubhouse.
They are 25 games over .500 with a nine-game lead over the Braves, so they have wiggle room. The Braves have lost three of their last five.
With Turner’s absence, Realmuto has been able to fill in that two-hole in the lineup perfectly. He is hitting .277 with 28 hits, two homers, six RBIs and 13 runs scored in 24 games since Turner injured his hamstring.
Turner is expected to return as soon as this weekend. Nick Castellanos will hit the two-spot in Tuesday’s lineup in Boston. Garrett Stubbs also starts at catcher, which we will see most often now until Realmuto returns.
Expect to see. a good amount of Marchán, who is out of options after this season.
