2024 NBA Playoff and Awards Predictions
Andrew Dieb-USA TODAY Sports
After a highly entertaining Play-In Tournament, the 2024 NBA Playoffs are upon us. The first games begin Saturday at 1:00 P.M. and all that’s left for the fans is to sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.
The Denver Nuggets are coming off of their first championship in team history and sit at the 2 seed in the West. They’ll have a tough road to the Finals, having to take on LeBron James, either Anthony Edwards or KD, and likely the OKC Big 3 in order to book a trip to the dance. At the moment, the Nuggets have the 2nd-highest odds to go back-to-back. The Boston Celtics are the clear favorites to win it all this year, with the Thunder, Clippers, and Milwaukee Bucks following up with Boston and Denver for the highest chance to take home the Larry O’Brien.
Eastern Conference Seeds and Predictions
- Boston Celtics (64-18)
- New York Knicks (50-32)
- Milwaukee Bucks (49-33)
- Cleveland Cavaliers (48-34)
- Orlando Magic (47-35)
- Indiana Pacers (47-35)
- Philadelphia 76ers (47-35)
- Miami Heat (46-36)
Boston is a team like no other in the current NBA. The Celtics are clearly the best team in the league, and it isn’t particularly close. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are both playing some of their best basketball, while Al Horford is also always scary in the Playoffs. The Celtics look to pass the Lakers for the most championships in NBA history with 18.
The New York Knicks made it all the way to the 2 seed after being the 5 seed in 2023. Jalen Brunson has been one of the best players in the entire NBA and he looks to push the Knicks past the Sixers in the 1st Round and continue off that momentum to make a Finals push. New York has the talent to do this, they just need to execute.
This Milwaukee Bucks team may be the 3 seed, but they sure don’t play like one. The firing of Adrian Griffin and the hiring of Doc Rivers completely altered this team. They went from a top 3 team to a borderline top 10 after finishing the season 15-17 in Doc’s 32 games with the team. The Bucks will have a tough time with the Pacers to start the Playoffs.
Cleveland has multiple dominant players including Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, and Evan Mobley. They have a good chance of making a decent playoff push and we’ll see if the Cavaliers can fight their way to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since the LeBron era.
The Magic surprised the NBA by making it into the Playoffs with some comfort. They snagged the 5 seed and will face Cleveland in the 1st Round. The dynamic duo of Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs is excellent and they’re going to do their best to push their way past a loaded Cavalier lineup.
Tyrese Haliburton, Pascal Siakam, and the Indiana Pacers were a great team early in the season, but Haliburton has become very inconsistent lately. The Pacers are going to hope that their All-Star can get back to where he was before the All-Star Break to elevate past the Eastern Conference competition.
Joel Embiid and the 76ers were a dominant team when he was on the floor. If the Sixers can be half as powerful as they are when Maxey, Oubre, and Embiid are on the floor together, they’ll have no problems making it past the Knicks. However, if Embiid gets injured in the Playoffs once again, issues will arise very fast for a Philadelphia squad that doesn’t have much depth.
The Heat made it out of the Play-In alive after a scare from the Sixers. Jimmy Butler‘s injury didn’t seem to affect Miami against Atlanta, but it very well could against Boston. The Celtics shouldn’t have too many issues with a Miami squad that lacks Butler,
Western Conference Seeds and Predictions
- Oklahoma City Thunder (57-25)
- Denver Nuggets (57-25)
- Minnesota Timberwolves (56-26)
- Los Angeles Clippers (51-31)
- Dallas Mavericks (50-32)
- Phoenix Suns (49-33)
- Los Angeles Lakers (47-35)
- New Orleans Pelicans (49-33)
Who would have thought going into this season that the OKC Thunder would reign atop the West? The Thunder pushed their way past the reigning champions to take the top seed. The squad of Shai, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren is the best team that Oklahoma City has seen since early 2010 Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden.
Denver hasn’t regressed since last season and they look to repeat this year. Jokic’s squad is just as dominant and has just as good of a chance to win the championship this year as they did last year. Jokic found a way to be as successful as he was in 2023 and he will try and push the Nuggets past the Lakers in the 1st Round.
Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves shocked the world by playing the best basketball they’ve played in years. Karl-Anthony Towns is playing excellently and is having one of the best seasons he’s ever had. Minnesota hopes to eliminate the Suns in what will be a highly entertaining matchup.
The Kawhi Leonard-led Clippers finally clicked after starting the season on a low note. They come into the Playoffs as the 4 seed in the West and take on the Mavs to begin the postseason. This team has one of the highest odds to win it all and they 100% deserve that after the way they have played this season.
Luka Doncic‘s Dallas Mavericks improved exponentially from 2023 to 2024. They’re back in the Playoffs and have a huge opportunity to pull off the upset over the Clippers. This squad has the tools to make a deep Playoff run; they just need to execute.
The Phoenix Suns have the chance to take advantage of the youth of Minnesota and pull off an upset to attempt and make it deep into the Playoffs. The experience of KD and the dominance of Devin Booker may be enough to be a threat in the West.
LeBron James’s Lakers have the talent and the experience to compete with any team in the NBA. They will be tested in the first round against Denver and should they beat them, a deep run could be expected. Anthony Davis is playing as well as ever and the team has one of the deepest benches in the NBA which could be useful in late-game scenarios.
The New Orleans Pelicans snagged the 8 seed in the West after a tough Play-In tournament where they eliminated Sacramento in the process. Zion Williamson can finally prove he was number 1 pick worthy by giving the Thunder a run for their money in the first round.
