The Philadelphia Phillies’ 2024 season got off to a rough start on Opening Weekend.
They lost their Opening Day game 9-3 at Citizens Bank Park to the Atlanta Braves. Despite falling behind early to the Phillies’ offense, the Braves bats exploded in the eighth inning after Zack Wheeler exited, scoring seven runs to take control. A key part of the rally was Adam Duvall‘s clutch two-run double. The Braves bullpen then shut down the Phillies, securing the win.
The Phillies faced a tough challenge on March 30th falling to their divisional rivals, the Braves, again by a score of 12-4. Although they managed to put runs on the board early and even chased Braves starter Max Fried in the first inning, their offensive efforts were overshadowed by a relentless Braves lineup. The Braves launched four home runs, including blasts from Ozzie Albies, Matt Olson, Marcell Ozuna, and Michael Harris II.
While the loss stings, the Phillies can take solace in their early scoring and look to capitalize on those early opportunities with runners on base in future games. They’ll need to tighten up their pitching to contain explosive offenses like the Braves.

With two outs and the bases loaded, Johan Rojas grounded into what appeared to be a game-ending double play. After a video review, the out-at-second was confirmed, sending cheers through the sold-out crowd. However, the celebration was short-lived. The umpire, drowned out by the fans’ excitement, hadn’t announced the full call — Rojas was safe at first base due to a fielder’s interference. This crucial reversal extended the inning and kept hope alive for the Phillies.
Taking advantage of the unexpected opportunity, the Phillies strung together key hits. Trea Turner singled to score a run, followed by Alec Bohm‘s clutch two-run single that put Philadelphia in front. The Braves managed to answer with a run in the eighth, but the Phillies’ bullpen held strong to secure the dramatic victory.
