The Flyers geared up tonight for a Metropolitan showdown vs the Hurricanes once again without Captain Sean Couturier who still finds himself as a healthy scratch as we watch his situation unfold. The Flyers did earn 1 point tonight but ultimately lost in overtime on a Seth Jarvis goal.

The 1 point does put them up to 79 on the season and helps in the battle for third place in the Metro, but before we get to standings let’s go over the game.

Samuel Ersson and Frederik Andersen were each brick walls for their teams in a scoreless first period of hockey. One of the biggest mistakes the Flyers made all night came just 4 and a half minutes into the first period. An Owen Tippett goal which would’ve given the Flyers a 1-0 lead, was taken off the board due to Travis Konecny being offsides. Just over 3 minutes later the Canes had a prime opportunity to go up 1-0, but were denied by a phenomenal glove save by the rookie Ersson.

The scoring got going in the second period and started with Jordan Martinook putting Carolina on the board 3:56 into the second period. The Flyers immediately struck back wasting no time with a Scott Laughton goal 25 seconds later 4:21 into the period. It stayed this way for just about 5 minutes when Jalen Chatfield buried one in front of his home crowd 10:43 into the second period.

The Flyers went into the 3rd period searching for the equalizer and Carolina didn’t make it easy. Both Ersson and Andersen as I mentioned were both on their game tonight. Despite that, 10:16 into the final period of regulation, who else, but the star Konecny to find the back of the net and ultimately send this game to overtime tied at 2.

Unfortunately for the Flyers, the Canes didn’t wait long to put one in the back of the net in OT. Seth Jarvis got one by Ersson assisted by Brent Burns. This concludes the 4-game regular season series between the Hurricanes and Flyers with Carolina taking 3 of 4 games.

Many Flyers had great games in the close loss notably Sam Ersson, building off of his performance against Toronto, had 30 saves on 33 shots and helped keep the Flyers in it all night long. Travis Konecny and Scott Laughton both had goals, while Owen Tippett, Joel Farabee, Morgan Frost, and the young stud Bobby Brink all picked up assists.

The worst-ranked Flyers power play continued its struggles tonight, going 0 for 3 with 4 minutes total with the man advantage. One thing that did go well is the team built off the franchise record in blocked shots against the Maple Leafs and had 27 tonight to Carolinas 16.
