In a game that may have decided the season, the Philadelphia Flyers pulled out a big win over the New York Rangers.
Recap:
Period 1
Mika Zibanejad won the opening faceoff.
It took a while for virtually anything to happen, but Philippe Myers was called for slashing Kaapo Kakko. Rangers went to the game’s first power play. The Flyers killed it, but right after it was expired Filip Chytil came rolling in, passed the puck to K’Andre Miller, who then passed it to Brendan Smith, who fired it home past Brian Elliot to make it 1-0 Rangers at 9:55. Flyers have allowed the first goal in 14 of last 16 games.
Smith cross checked Claude Giroux. Flyers went to the power play. With 19 seconds left in the Flyers’ power play, Jakub Voracek went off for tripping. There was 19 seconds of four-on-four hockey, then the Flyers’ power play expired. Igor Shesterkin has some good looking saves on the power kill for the Rangers. And this…
The Flyers killed the Rangers’ power play.
Period stats
Flyers: 11 shots on goal, 8 hits, 8 faceoffs won, 4 penalty minutes.
Rangers: 14 shots on goal, 3 hits, 17 faceoffs win, 2 penalty minutes.
After 20 minutes of play, the Rangers led 1-0.
Period 2
Mika Zibanejad won the faceoff to open the second period.
At 7:12, Chris Kreider went to the box because held Nicolas Aube-Kubel. With 17 seconds left, Travis Konecny made his way to the box for hooking Brett Howden. There were 17 seconds of four-on-four. Both penalties were killed.
Smith would head back to the box for hooking TK. Rangers killed the power play.
James van Riemsdyk took a TK shot off the face in front of the net, and the puck found its way into the net. JVR went right down after taking the hit and was in a lot of pain. Really hope he’s ok. Anyways, game’s tied at one!
Joel Farabee was hooked in front of the goal by Libor Hajek, and he had a penalty shot. Farabee’s penalty shot was denied as he really didn’t do anything on it.
Period stats
Flyers: 14 shots on goal, 6 hits, 16 faceoffs won, 2 penalty minutes.
Rangers: 11 shots on goal, 2 hits, 8 faceoffs win, 4 penalty minutes.
After two periods of play, the game was tied at one.
Period 3
Sean Couturier won the faceoff to start the final period.
K’Andre Miller caught Sean Couturier up high with his stick. It was a four minute double-minor penalty, a perfect opportunity for Philadelphia to take the lead. About halfway through the power play, Ivan Provorov shot a pass to JVR — in his office — and he tipped the puck in to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead. He still gets the job done in his office, even with an extra face mask.
Voracek skated down the ie with Giroux on a two-on-one. Voracek got a beautiful shot off that sunk into the net. 3-1 Flyers.
Rangers pulled the goalie, then Artemi Panarin shot a bullet at the net and score to make 3-2.
Flyers hung on for the 3-2 win.
