Flyers bounce back as they split the back-to-back with the Sabres 3-0

After an embarrassing night on Monday as they lost to the Buffalo Sabres 6-1, the Philadelphia Flyers bounced back as they beat the same team, the Sabres, 3-0. Brian Elliot recorded his 41st career shutout as he had 40 saves on 40 shots. The Flyers lost two big players due to injuries which is obviously not good. Nice night and a good bounce back for the Fly Guys.

Here’s tonight’s recap:

Period 1

The Flyers started off with a Scott Laughton faceoff win, and we’re underway!

There was tough stretch towards the beginning of the period. Hagg went to the box for interference. A little over a minute later, Raffl got called for high-sticking. Sabres had a five-on-three for 56 seconds. With some great penalty killing by the Flyers, which they did not have Monday night, the Flyers killed both penalties.

The Flyers then got their chance at a power play as Skinner went to the box for tripping. The Flyers didn’t get much done as the penalty was killed by the Sabres.

The Flyers got themselves in a sticky situation as Sabres were rushing Flyers goalie Brian Elliot. A pass went to the other side of Elliot. A one-timer went to Elliot’s pad, nice save. The shooter got his own rebound and shot at Elliot’s falling body. Elliot knocked it down and covered it up.

The period would end all knotted up at 0.

The Flyers came out with a lot more energy. They had big hits, big plays, and big moments. Really nice period by the Fly Guys!

Period stats:

Flyers: 11 shots on goal, 11 hits, 13 faceoffs won, 4 penalty minutes.

Sabres: 11 shots on goal, 3 hits, 9 faceoffs won, 2 penalty minutes.

Score after one, 0-0.

Period 2

In the beginning of the period, Brandon Montour shoved Ivan Provorov into Carter Hutton. Provorov stuck out his elbow on accident and knocked the helmet off Sabres’ goalie Hutton’s head. There was then a scuffle behind the goal. No penalty was called and the game continued.

It appeared that Phil Myers was not on the bench in the second period as he got hit hard in the first period. Apparently it is an injury. Myers for now has exited the game. The Flyers will release more information after the game. There is no extra information at the time of this article being wrote. (UPDATE) Morgan Frost and Phil Myers are getting MRIs. Flyers will know more on Wednesday, per Alain Vigneault. This is not good.

After a crazy sequence where the Flyers and Sabres both hit the post, Jakub Voracek will head to the penalty box for tripping. Flyers killed the penalty as Brian Elliot was making great save after great save after great save.

Morgan Frost took a hit behind the net and went off the ice in pain. It looks like his wrist is what’s hurting. He’s on his knees in the tunnel with Jim McCrossin attending to him. Another tough break for the Flyers. (UPDATE) Morgan Frost and Phil Myers are getting MRIs. Flyers will know more on Wednesday, per Alain Vigneault.

At the end of the period, Konecny got a nice pass from the blue line. Konecny was all alone as he scored the first goal of the competition, FINALLY!

With just a second remaining in the period, Ristolainen got called for roughing as he and Laughton exchanged some shoves at the Sabres’ blue line. Penalty will go into the third.

Period stats:

Flyers: 5 shots on goal, 4 hits, 4 faceoffs won, 4 penalty minutes.

Sabres: 1 shot on goal, 4 hits, 3 faceoffs won, 2 penalty minutes.

Period 3

No Morgan Frost or Philippe Myers to start third period.

Sabres goaltender Carter Hutton has left the game with an unspecified injury. Jonas Johansson entered the game.

Flyers started on the power play that started at the end of the second period. Power play was killed by Buffalo.

After a pretty sleeper of a period with not much happening, Elliot makes a huge save, the puck finds it’s way on the other side of the ice, and Jakub Voracek gets it in the net for his first goal of the season!

Kevin Hayes shoots a nice pass from the other end of the ice to Voracek on a two-on-one who one times it into the net to make the score 2-0!

The Sabres pulled the goalies with 2:40 left in the third.

And with that, Kevin Hayes, even though he might not’ve known where the puck exactly was, sends the puck down to the empty net and scores his second empty net goal of the season.

Game stats:

Flyers: 30 shots on goal, 37 hits, 32 faceoffs won, 6 penalty minutes.

Sabres: 40 shots on goal, 18 hits, 30 faceoffs won, 4 penalty minutes.

3 stars:

  1. Brian Elliot (40 save shutout)
  2. Travis Konecny (goal)
  3. Ivan Provorov (just good at what he does)

The now 3-1-0 Flyers will hit the road for the first time this season. They will had to Boston to take on the Bruins on Thursday night at 7:00 P.M. E.S.T.
