VJ Edgecombe suffered a lumbar contusion during the 76ers’ 131-91 blowout loss on Tuesday night against the San Antonio Spurs, the team announced Wednesday following an MRI. The rookie is out on Wednesday against the Utah Jazz and will be reevaluated ahead of their next game in Atlanta on Saturday.
Edgecombe, who scored just six points on Tuesday, fell strongly to the hardwood after being fouled by Carter Bryant on a three-point attempt with 0.2 seconds left in the first half. He knocked down two of three free throws and was assisted off the floor. The 20-year-old guard was ruled out at halftime with a lower-back injury as the Sixers trailed 78-53. Cam Payne opened the second half in his place.

Edgecombe has played in 57 of the Sixers’ 61 games and is averaging 35.1 minutes a game, recording 15.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.5 steals a night, providing some much-needed young life to the 33-28 76ers. The 2026 Rising Stars game MVP is one of three rookies in the NBA this season averaging at least 15 points, five rebounds, and three assists per game.

Edgecombe joins a long list of the Sixers’ sidelined players against the Jazz in the second-leg of their back-to-back, joining Joel Embiid (strained right oblique), Kelly Oubre Jr. (illness), Paul George (suspension), and Johni Broome (right knee meniscus surgery recovery). This is Embiid’s third and final scheduled game off with a strained right oblique.
