Howie Roseman is at it again.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Philadelphia Eagles are acquiring quarterback Sam Howell from the Minnesota Vikings.

The Eagles are sending a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round pick to Minnesota, and in return, the Eagles receive Howell and a 2026 sixth-rounder.

This move likely indicates that current Eagles backup quarterback Tanner McKee will miss time to start the 2025 season with a finger injury that has landed him on the injury report for the past few weeks.

The two other quarterbacks on the roster, Dorian Thompson-Robinson and rookie Kyle McCord, have wildly underperformed during their game action this preseason, and because of that, the team felt they needed to improve their quarterback depth.

For Howell, this is the second time this offseason he has been dealt, the previous being when the Seahawks traded him during Day 3 of the 2025 NFL draft back in April to Minnesota. Minnesota and Seattle swapped fifth-rounders in that deal.

In Seattle, Howell appeared in just two games, throwing for just 24 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception. Before his time in the Northwest, Howell spent his first two seasons in the NFL in Washington, D.C, playing quarterback for the Washington Commanders. During his two seasons in D.C., Howell started 18 games, including all 17 in the 2023 season, for a record of 5-13. Howell threw for a total of 4,115 yards in 18 games, while also tossing 22 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. He also rushed for six touchdowns and 298 yards during those 18 games.

The trade for Howell marks the third trade the Eagles have made since training camp began a month ago, the other being the trade for cornerback Jakorian Bennett from the Raiders, and the one for wide receiver John Metchie from the Texans. These trades are due not only to bolstering the depth chart, but also because the Eagles have an excess of picks heading into the 2026 NFL draft, and the team must trade some before the draft in April.
