Recap of Flyers’ big win over Penguins in shootout

The Philadelphia Flyers stay alive in the playoff hunt as they beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in a shootout.
Recap:
Period 1
Sidney Crosby, the Flyer killer himself, won the opening draw.
It took a good while for some action to start brewing, but at 8:25 Joel Farabee goes off for tripping Jared McCann. The Flyers were playing very aggressively and killed the Penguin’ power play easily.
Something of note, the Penguins have no shots through the first 11:30. This is pretty extreme for the Flyers, as their known for allowing three goals in 10:00.
Crosby blew right past Justin Braun, but just shot wide. Very scary moment there for the Flyers. What am I kidding, anytime Crosby has the puck it’s scary.
Tristan Jarry got caught tripping, this would mark the first power play of the evening for the Flyers. Penguins killed off the power play as the Flyers played quite awful on the man advantage.
Brian Dumoulin got a shorthanded breakaway and drawled a hooking penalty. The Flyers killed it off.
Period stats
Flyers: 5 shots-on-goal, 9 hits, 11 faceoffs won, 4 penalty minutes.
Penguins: 3 shots-on-goal, 6 hits, 11 faceoffs won, 2 penalty minutes.
After one period of play, no goals were scored.
Period 2
Sean Couturier won the opening draw to start the second period.
Kris Letang intercepted the puck in the Flyers’ offensive zone. Letang skated up the ice, passed the puck to Crosby, and he beat Carter Hart from the right side to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead.
Jake Guentzel went to the box for hooking. Penguins killed it.
Period stats
Flyers: 3 shots-on-goal, 3 hits, 5 faceoffs won, 0 penalty minutes.
Penguins: 9 shots-on-goal, 0 hits, 3 faceoffs won, 2 penalty minutes.
Period 3
Claude Giroux won the opening draw.
Quickly into the final period, Jakub Voracek received the puck off a rebound. He came in and shot from the end of the faceoff circle, and sniped it into the net for a five-hole score. Voracek’s goal tied up the game.
Soon after the goal, Nolan Patrick got hit in the head off of a shot by Phil Myers. Patrick just suffered a migraine disorder last season, which is an episodic primary headache disorder. Patrick went right off the ice, let’s pray he’s okay!
Zachary Aston-Reese shot a pass across the ice in front of the net to Evan Rodrigues. Rodrigues put up a hot at the left arm of Hart. Hart moved over and made a fantastic save. Watch it here:
Travis Konecny would be called for holding, when he was fighting for the puck on the boards. Another questionable call by the referees. Flyers killed the power play. The penalty kill was pivotal to get this game past regulation.
Overtime
Crosby won the faceoff to start the overtime.
Lots of big saves really helped out the sloppy Flyers defense throughout the overtime.
Crosby then tripped Courtier with 1:57 left in overtime. A costly mistake from a guy that usually doesn’t make mistakes. The Flyers were unable to do anything on the power play, so they went to a shootout.
Shootout
Round 1:
Guentzel goes five-hole and scores.
Giroux makes a move and scores.
Round 2:
Crosby stopped by the glove of Hart.
Couturier makes the move to the backhand and scores.
Round 3:
Kris Letang stopped by Hart, and the Flyers win.
Game stats
Flyers: 27 shots-on-goal, 25 hits, 34 faceoffs won, 6 penalty minutes.
Penguins: 32 shots-on-goal, 16 hits, 32 faceoffs won, 6 penalty minutes.
