Eagles are reportedly hiring Jonathan Gannon as their next defensive coordinator

1

While the Philadelphia Eagles will apparently interview Washington defensive backs coach Chris Harris for the job, they’ve already found their man. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer says Jonathan Gannon has emerged as a favorite, Mike Lombardi says it’s a done deal.

Both candidates for the job that we’ve heard about (Jonathan Gannon & Chris Harris) have coached with Eagles new head coach Nick Sirianni before, which is significant. The last time the Eagles hired a head coach, Doug Pederson and former defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz did not have a close relationship.

Gannon has been the Colts’ defensive backs coach since 2018, when for Eagles’ offensive coordinator Frank Reich’s staff took over in Indianapolis. So Reich and Sirianni have been working together for the last three seasons.

Gannon has been a hot name over the last week, taking several interviews for defensive coordinator positions. So this would be a good get for the Eagles.

Before joining the Colts, Gannon was the Minnesota Vikings’ assistant defensive backs coach for four seasons and was with the Tennessee Titans before that. His first NFL job came with the Atlanta Falcons in 2007 as a defensive assistant.

The Colts have been a 4-3 team in the last three years under defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. The Eagles have been a 4-3 team for the last five seasons and clearly have the personnel geared toward that front.

It’s a good get for the Birds, let’s just hope it works out.
